This year the cricket teams had a fairly good season. The School played 17 matches of which 10 were won, 4 were drawn and 3 were lost. The 1st eleven, captained by Clubbe, had a mixed season. They saved their greatest efforts for the annual match against the Staff. This match was won by the School by 5 wickets. There were very few individual feats worthy of note, the only exceptions being Clubbe's 6 15 against Dury's 41 against the Parents. The team should be much stronger next year with the inclusion of a number of this season's 2nd eleven. 1st Eleven: Kings won by 37; Old Boys lost by 37; Buckingham College lost by 9 wickets; Staff won by 5 wickets; Parents drawn. The 2nd eleven made up of 4th year boys played well and did not lose a match. There were a number of individual successes such as O'Leary 7 20 (in¬cluding a hat trick), Handley (50) and Griffiths (43), in a stand of 80 against Buckingham College and O'Gorman 41 not out against King's. This team has a balanced bowling attack and a number of steady batsmen with some of them capable of rapid scoring. If they all show the keenness again next year they should considerably strengthen the 1st eleven. They should realise however that the opposition next season will be of a much higher standard. 2nd Eleven: Kings won by 52 runs; Buckingham College won by 72 runs: Downer drawn; Harrow High won by 7 wickets; Buckingham College won by 4 wickets. Of the younger teams the Under 13's had the most successful season. They won 2 of the 4 matches played, very easily, and drew the other 2, but they could have won them both very easily with a little more luck. Dury was the most consistent batsman making several scores over 40. Murray made the highest score of the season with 81 scored at a very fast rate against Finchley. The Under 13's played well and did well to only lose one match. The Under 12's only match of the season produced the most exciting finish of the season. At the end of this game against Alperton the scorer announced that we had won by one wicket. However when the scores were checked it was discovered that the scores were level. The first ball after stumps were repitched was hit straight to cover who made a fine catch and so the match was tied. Results of Junior matches: Under 14's Eleven: Under 13's Eleven: Under 12's Eleven: Played 17, Won 10, Drawn 4, Lost 3. Next season the School is playing most of the Cricket fixtures on Saturday mornings. We shall be playing other Local Grammar Schools and so the standard of play will have to be much higher than this year. We have a number of talented cricketers in School who should make a very strong Eleven. It must be remembered, however, that with cricket regular practice is vital. Every effort must be made by each member of each team to attend every net practice. It is also hoped to have a number of indoor sessions of skills practice (stroke and bowling coach¬ing) during the winter. It is also planned to have a School cricket cap next year. The colour and design are still being discussed but they should be ready by Easter. I should like to thank those members of the teams who have helped look after the gear, scored at matches and in particularly Marcantonio who has been writing to other schools fixing our matches for next season. We have had a good season but I think we could have an even better one next year. |
