1st XI Visit to Chester - Easter 1967

The 1st XI trip to Chester was something that had not been attempted by the School for a number of years. Its success, however, should ensure that not so great a period of time will elapse before the next one. We left for Chester on the Tuesday of Easter week, March 28th, and returned on the following Sunday, April 2nd. During this time we stayed at the Salvatorian College in Christleton, about two miles outside Chester. Three matches had been arranged, one on the Wednesday evening against St. Werburghs' Youth Club, Chester, the second on Thursday evening, against Chester Colts, the junior team of Chester Football Club, and the third one on Friday afternoon against Oversleigh, Secondary School. The game against the Colts was played on the ground of Chester F.C. - the Stadium - and after the game we were taken into the Board Room where refreshments were served. It was the results gained from these matches which, to my mind, made the tour a success. The results are as follows:

v St. Werburgh Youth Clubs won 1 - 0 Scorer Mangan
v Chester ColtsSchool lost 2 - 0
v Overleigh School won 7 - 0 Scorers Shaw (3) Coughlan (2) Tobin and Mangan

In the match against Chester Colts though we lost, we were by no means disgraced. We could say "we wuz robbed" but the least said about that the better. It is no use thinking of what might have been if ...

I feel that the tour was not only a success because of the results obtained, but because the whole party, Fr. Louis, Mr. Tufnell, and especially the boys, seemed to have had a lot of fun. I did for my part, anyway.

P. Mangan - 1st XI Captain.
