1st XI Report

Due to the fact that the majority; of last year's 1st XI had left at the end of the Summer Term it was hardly surprising that this year's 1st XI found victory hard to achieve in the first few games. The team needed time to settle down and adjust to the fact that while skill was there the lack of weight and maturity would be a drawback. P. Mangan was appointed as Captain and it was due, in no small way, to his whole-hearted enthusiasm, that the team eventually settled down to play attractive football.

It was during the opening weeks of the season that Preston Manor County knocked us out of the Grammar Schools Competition 2 - 1, it and the Old Salvatorians defeated us 7 - 0. But results were coming, and amongst them, was the defeat of Abbotsfield 6 - 3 in the Tye Competition for Senior Teams of Schools in Middlesex. This game is worthy of mention since the score at one time was 3 - 0 in favour of Abbotsfield. Eventually the 1st reached the semi-final stage of this competition where they were defeated, unluckily I feel, 5 - 3 by Ashford County after extra time, the score at full time being 2-2. During the Easter holiday a trip was made to Chester, where three games were played, resulting in two victories and one defeat.

So a season, which started rather dismally, ended on a satisfactory note. It was a team effort all the time and for that reason, results were obtained. These must now be developed and built upon, to ensure future successes. The ability is there, and I am certain that results will come.

RECORD: P.24, W.11, D.5, L.8, G.F.63, G.A.49
