2nd XI Report

During the 1966/67 Season the 2nd XI was drawn by the talent spotting eyes of Mr. J. Henry, our Manager, from a cross-section of the Upper School. It included, I am glad to say, a majority of Upper Sixth and a few outstanding players from the Lower Sixth and Fifth years.

Our fixtures followed the course of the 1st XI and we invariably played on Saturday mornings throughout the season. Although Saturday mornings were cold and a 'long-lie-in' appealed to many, as opposed to kicking a ball about, eleven tired-looking players nearly always turned up for the kick-off. Instilled with confidence and tactics by our Manager/Coach, those same eleven tired players were like demons on the pitch, striving forward for the rewarding goal; with the result that we had a very successful season.

I think I must point out that the reason for our apparent success was the fact that many of the players, in this, their final year, treated the game as something of a break from the monotony of constant study, and consequently, if I may use. that old cliché - 'it isn't important whether you win or lose, but how you play that matters'.

This is the motto that will, I think, make a successful team and I hope that in the future the 2nd XI will play all their games in the same tradition.
