Our success in the latter part of the season was greatly due to a newcomer to the team, Mick Burke. He had not played for the School before, and after a couple of matches none of us could understand why. A number of the players were present in practically every game. In the defence, Tom Cornish (who has no real competition for his place), Johnson, Geary and Clements were particularly consistent. Duffy and Feerick in. the forward line continued to score goals and they were later joined by Burke who finished the season by being top scorer with over 30 goals. Duffy was close behind this total, after being top scorer in the previous two seasons. Another newcomer to the team was Herson who turned out to be a good replacement for Byrne. After being left out of the team on many different occasions Hearns never gave up trying and by the end of the season he deservedly had a regular team place. Another player who did not always play was Ryan, but by the end of the season he too had a permanent place, and scored. many useful goals.
The team at the end of the year, and the one which was so near yet so far from getting the league and Cup double was: Cornish, Johnson, Hearns Clements, Geary, Herson, Ryan, Boyle, Duffy, Feerick, Burke, 12th man - P. Bell, (who turned up regularly to matches throughout the season).
To my mind the teams two most creditable performances were: (1) away to Blackwell in the League, when we were 4 - 1 down within twenty minutes, and pulled the game back to win 7 - 5; (2) away match against Cardinal Vaughan when we were down 3 - 2 with ten minutes to go, against very good opposition and a team we had never beaten, and fought back to win 4 - 3.
