Football Under 14s l967-8

The team had a very successful season, and was the outstanding team in the school. We lost only six matches out of thirty-one played: four of these matches were in our first six games so it shows how we must have improved after our bad start.

The improvement was vastly due to the re-organisation in the team which brought Casey out of goal to centre half, and put Necchi into goal with Purcell on the left wing.

Regular members in the defence were Necchi who played very well in goal and let only the very minimum of goals passed; Duffy and Lynch who were ever consistent and very reliable, Casey who improved the defence terrifically and myself.

Playing a 4-2-4 formation requires two good linkmen, we are fortunate in having Micky Matthews and Kevin Wilson. Both of these have natural ability, are fine attackers and strong defenders.

Back: Lynch, Purcell, Power, McCloskey, Wilson, Fitzgerald, Necchi.
Front: Buckler, Matthews, Casey, Czyrko, Duffy, Russell.

In the attack we have two very good and talented wingmen - Willie Fitzgerald and Kevin Purcell. Both have ability to shoot and many of the centres from the wings are snapped up by our two strikers Eamon Power and Jack McCloskey, who scored consistently during the season. Jack finished the season top scorer.

We won both trophies entered for by beating Lascelles in both finals, 5-3 and 3-1.

We had many good games and really played at our peak performance towards the end of the season.

With Mr. Tufnell as manager we had a great season, and hope for an even better one in l968-9.

E. Czyrko, Captain.
